FAQ's

Why RackTec Does Not Typically Mount to the Drip Rails

RackTec Phantom Series mounting locations are intentionally selected based on the construction of the vehicle roof. A drip rail may appear to be the strongest mounting location, but that is not necessarily the case.

Whenever possible, RackTec mounting points are positioned in areas where the roof structure provides additional support, such as:

  • Multiple layers of overlapping sheet metal
  • Areas immediately adjacent to factory roof reinforcements or crossmembers
  • Locations that distribute mounting loads effectively through the roof structure

We generally avoid mounting directly through the drip rail for another important reason: water management. The drip rail is designed to channel and collect water from the roof. Penetrating this low point can make long-term sealing more difficult and increases the importance of maintaining a watertight seal. In many vehicle applications, the structural advantage of mounting through the drip rail does not justify this additional risk.

For this reason, a RackTec installation that does not utilize the drip rail should not be interpreted as mounting only to an unsupported or weak section of roof skin. The mounting locations have been selected with the surrounding roof construction and reinforcement in mind.

 Factory mounting provisions are the exception

When a vehicle is equipped with suitable factory bolt holes or other dedicated mounting provisions in the drip rail, RackTec may utilize those locations. In these applications, RackTec is not creating a new penetration through the low point of the roof, so the same waterproofing concern associated with drilling new holes in the drip rail does not apply. For example, the Phantom Series Gen 3 utilizes factory bolt holes provided in the drip rail.

Roof Load Capacity

RackTec racks do not increase the load-carrying capacity of the vehicle roof and are not assigned a vehicle-specific weight rating. Customers should always follow the vehicle manufacturer's applicable roof-load limitations and should never exceed the vehicle manufacturer's rated roof capacity.

RackTec also discourages carrying excessively heavy equipment on the roof, regardless of the strength of the rack itself. Vehicle handling, center of gravity, roof structure, mounting system, and the vehicle manufacturer's limitations must all be considered when determining an appropriate load.
